ALIGARH, February 3: The Hiking and Mountaineering Club, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh organized a Sadbhavna Marathon Race as part of Republic Day celebrations, here on Sunday. About 700 students of different schools of Aligarh district including AMU maintained schools participated in the race. Lt Gen (Retd) Zameer Uddin Shah flagged off the race at football stadium.
Addressing the students, Gen Shah said that the University administration is committed to promote the sports activities in the campus. He said that within a year and a half a swimming pool of international level will be ready for students, while the present swimming pool will be fully reserved for girl students. Gen Shah urged the students to participate in the sports activities with their regular studies.
Prof Tariq Mansoor, Secretary, University Games Committee, welcomed the guests. Dr Shadab Khursheed highlighted the importance of the Marathon Race.
Irfan Khan of Shivdan Singh College won the overall championship in boys category, while in the girls’ category, Kalpana Chaudhary of Athletic Association was the overall winner. Besides this, 20 participants of each category were also felicitated. Mrs Sabiha Simin Shah gave away prizes to the winners.
The Marathon Race started from University Games Committee and covered adistance of 10 kilometers through Shamshad Market, Tasveer Mahal, Center Point, Marris Road, Diggi Road, Bab-e-Syed, VC Lodge and culminated at the University Football Ground.
