Bab-E-Syed_AMUALIGARH, July 25- Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) has expressed their shock and outrage over the suspension of Dr. S Ali Nadeem Rezavi, Associate Professor in History at Aligarh Muslim University by the varsity’s Vice-Chancellor over alleged remark against the vice chancellor on facebook.

In a press release DUTA expressed its solidarity with Dr Rezavi and termed the action by the vice chancellor as gross assault on freedom of speech and expression.

“His suspension for criticizing what he thought were illegal or motivated actions by the vice chancellor constitutes gross assault on the freedom of speech and expression. That this action was taken on the basis of reported comments by the teacher on social media network is a matter of grave concern.  It is also an example of the manner in which criticism is silenced by authoritarian administrations instituted in educational institutions. The vice chancellors reported personal misbehavior with Dr. Rezavi also deserves proper enquiry. That the vice chancellor wielding the stick at Aligarh is a retired Lieut. General also raises the question of the failure of the University Grants Commission to implement the rule that Vice-Chancellors must come from exclusively academic backgrounds,” the statement said.

Dr Rezavi on 12 July through a facebook post criticized the vice chancellor for his reported move of asking all the files and papers of Aligarh Historians Society for scrutiny. World renowned Historian Professor Emeritus Irfan Habib is the President of the society. Taking cognizance of the post, the university convened a special meeting of the Executive Council where the council authorized the vice chancellor to take action against Dr. Rezavi and subsequently he was suspended. It is alleged that the meeting was called in such a short notice that members of Executive Council who were from outside Aligarh couldn’t attend.

Nandita Narain and Harish Khanna, President and Secretary respectively of DUTA said that it will write to the vice chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University to press upon him to immediately revoke the suspension of Dr. Rezavi.
