MOGADISHU- Somali militant group al-Shabab claimed it was behind an attack utilizing bombs and gunmen late Wednesday in Mogadishu that killed at least 11 people.

The group claimed responsibility in a statement on Thursday for the attack, which occurred outside the Jazeera hotel near the city’s international airport that is popular with government officials and foreigners.

The attack involved a suicide car bomb followed by another explosion that came after emergency personnel arrived. The second bombing was followed by an assault by gunmen.

Al-Shabab has continued to carry out attacks, including a deadly bombing in September at a Mogadishu hotel that the group said was being used as a base for foreign and local intelligence.
