Pakistan’s ex-President Zardari appears in court in corruption charges

Asif Ali ZardariISLAMABAD, JAN 09 — Former Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has appeared before a court in a case relating to corruption charges, according to his lawyers. Though Zardari, who still heads the Pakistan People’s Party, has not yet been charged.

Farooq H. Naik,  his lawyer said that Zardari’s appearance in court on Thursday was his first since he stepped down last September.

The court had opened five graft cases against him before he became president. He enjoyed immunity from prosecution for the five years in office.

Thursday’s case relates to the construction of a polo field during his late wife’s premiership in the early 1990s.

The hearing was quickly adjourned.
