Aligarh Muslim University remembers Saiyid Hamid

Seminar on Saiyid HamidALIGARH- Paying rich tributes to Late Saiyid Hamid, former Vice Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University, Mr. Naseem Ahmad, Chairman, National Commission for Minorities and also a former Vice Chancellor himself, said that he was the only person next to Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, who vigorously worked for promotion of education on national level.

Mr. Naseem Ahmad was addressing a commemorative seminar held at AMU to mark the first death anniversary of Mr. Saiyid Hamid who rendered exemplary services to the nation as a civil servant and educationist.

In a passionate speech on the occasion, Mr. Ahmad said that Saiyid Hamid spoke less and pondered a lot. He dedicated himself to educational development of the people after his retirement and played a key role in establishing several educational institutions. His contribution in establishing the Hamdard Study Circle for preparing students for civil service examination is nonetheless revolutionary as this body has played a significant role in helping a large number of minority candidates in qualifying the prestigious examination.

Dr. S. Farooq, former Chairman, Uttarakhand Minority Commission and Managing Director, Himalya Drugs said that the educational caravan launched by Saiyid Hamid in early 1990s was a novel idea to popularize education amongst the marginalized section of society.

Prof. Saud Alam Qasmi remembered Saiyid Hamid as a crusader who brought a remarkable change in Muslims’ attitude towards education and helped them desist from being carried away by slogans.

Dr. Rahat Abrar affirmed that Saiyid Hamid’s commitment towards educational development of Muslims created a niche for him amongst the most distinguished personalities of India. He said that his mission and vision will be popularized through a foundation in his name. He said that the Aligarh Muslim University has already named its Senior Secondary School (Boys) after Saiyid Hamid.

Eminent Urdu journalist Mr. Mansoor Agha said that Saiyid Hamid will also be remembered for his humility and dedication for educational advancement. He said that Saiyid Hamid wanted people to make education an arm to deal with all odds of life.

Mr. Samar Hamid, who presided over the Seminar, fondly remembering Saiyid Hamid said that his father was a true gentleman who commanded great respect and regard in all sections of society.

On this occasion, a book on Saiyid Hamid was also released by Mr. Mansoor Agha.
